Dive the South China Sea in Anambas Islands

The Anambas Islands are located between Singapore and the Natuna islands in the South China Sea. Earlier the islands were better known as a base for off shore oil drilling and natural gas explorations, but today Anambas has gained popularity among divers on account of  its pristine corals and azure seas where whalesharks may suddenly appear. The islands are easiest accessible by live-aboards from Singapore and Malaysia.
Anambas is the latest district in the province of the Riau Archipelago.  Best-known sites are the underwater reefs of Tokong Berlayar, the Malang Biru island which has steep slopes, the Katoaka reef, and the Seven Skies wreck.

To Stay

Accommodation is only available on Siantan Island, about half hour away from the Airport by boat. On Siantan Island we find the "Capital City" of the Anambas Archipelago, a very pleasant place called Kota Tarempa. Here in Kota Tarempa are three hotels,
1) Wisma Tanjung Indah
An atmospheric simple Wooden hotel build on stilts at the waterfront offering 40 rooms. Here VIP rooms cost about 10 American Dollars a night and Standard rooms about 5 dollars. The hotel has its simple charm but is definitely nowhere remotely comfortable.
2) The Sakura Guest-House
Another 2 story wooden construction offering 6 basic rooms for about 5 American Dollars a night.
3) The Anambas Resort
The best and most comfortable "upmarket" resort in the whole archipelago is the Anambas Resort about a 10 minute walk from Kota Tamperah in the next village called Tanjung Tebu. Here you find concrete bungalows built on stilts over a sleepy sheltered bay with hot shower, the resort is also offering a rather good restaurant. Prices for one of these large and adequate rooms seem to be about 25 American dollars a night.

The Anambas islands are very remote and have little facilities, including little health care, while restaurants sell only Indonesian food. Therefore, when you wish to dive here, best travel on fully equipped liveaboards or take your own yacht with complete telecommunications connectivity.
